Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
Because of our Professional Development Day on Friday, April 21, Thursday will be a regular 1-8 schedule. There will not be any classes held on Friday, April 21; teachers and administrators will be in meetings and training the entire day, so they will not be available. That means our students get a 4-day weekend because Mid-Spring Break is Monday, April 24, and our school will be closed for the day. We will be back to the business of learning on Tuesday, April 25. And then, it is a straight shot to Memorial Day and the end of another school year.
Next week, OHMS Media Center is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. April 25-28, students will be able to shop for the latest books, posters, and other items with their Language Arts classes. Books are always a good idea.
The Panorama Student survey is now open. We hope that students will choose to participate in this important survey. This is the feedback we use to help us know if our students are feeling connected and capable. Students will have the opportunity to take the survey in their TA classes. Participation is voluntary; students may always respectfully pass on this opportunity.
If your student will be a sophomore at Riverton High School, this information is for you: Student schedules will be released on April 20th. There is a Skyward Message on your student’s Skyward account with a tutorial about the registration process. Students may change their RHS schedules starting April 27.
Heads up to our 9th grade students: Lagoon is back again! Tickets will be available for Thursday, June 1st. Student admission for the day is $55. There will also be a small charge for the bus ride to Lagoon. More information to come!
Summer School is coming June 12-16. We will have some elective experiences available, a few advanced workshops and of course, credit recovery for any outgoing 9th grade student who failed a core class. Please mark the dates on your calendar and I will send more information soon.
Perhaps because it is finally Spring, we have had a higher number of tardies in recent days. Students do so much better if they are here and ready to learn before the tardy bell rings. Being on time helps punctual students feel like they are more in control; they have time to organize themselves and their thoughts in preparation for learning. Please help your student(s) be on time – especially first thing in the morning.
Another issue we have seen more than we would like lately is a problem with social media. In our experience as a school, we have found that messages sent through Snapchat and pictures through Instagram have encouraged some serious conflicts. Our SRO, Detective Ashley, and the entire administrative team strongly encourage parents to help their students take a break from Snapchat until summer. If the app is not on a phone, and the student isn’t using it, it helps everyone avoid problems.
My sincere appreciation to the students and families who supported Disney’s Camp Rock, our school musical. It was fabulous to see our community support us with this fun production. Our students who worked as cast and crew deserve major parts on the back – they did a first-rate job.
Kindest regards,
Donna C. Hunter, Principal
